Welcome to watercolours with an added zing!! Based on the works of Australian Artist Llyod Rees
BACKGROUND: The first requirement for this lesson is to decide on the situation of the work you are about to create.
56M are studying the COGS unit Heritage and Traditions, and the students have been on an excursion for 3 days and 2 nights to Sydney. So the artwork
we will create is based on the harbour and the Harbour Bridge which was a real point of interest for the students on their inner ciity visit to Sydney.
Students had the opportunity to view video footage of the finishing scenes of the Harbour Bridge constuction in 1930's with discussions re safety conditions as compared to modern safety requirements, the way the workmen moved around the construction site.
Students did some creative narrative writing placing themself as either a family member of a constuction worker or a worker or a local resident of the area in the late 1920's early 1930's.
DRAWING - 56M have used regular small ART PAPER and 2B pencils
THE HARBOUR FORESHORE
Discuss with students how they are going to draw a landscape view the edge of the Harbour onto which they will add The Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Encourage and talk students through drawing in lines to indicate the sky/ the land area and the water or harbour.
FOR ANTARCTICA
draw the ice cliff line and the ocean line the meeting point might become a pebbly beach( easy to represent )
FOR DARLING RIVER BASIN Using an aerial view represent the river/ for extra interest add a second river stream. The mark in where the green tree belt beside the river would extend out to/ the you could draw some close contours towards an outer corner to be representational of a hill or mountain in the area. Discuss concept of animals and what their view might be from the sky.
USING WATERCOLOURS
materials watercolour paints....thick soft brushes...water changed regularly. If the watercolours are contained in their own palette they are much eaiser to use see photograph of materials page.
Technique of watercolour encourage students to drop clear water onto area they wish to paint. Then with lots of water on brush load the watercolour eg warm blue onto brush and drop the paint onto the wet paper. Show children how the paint lands and forms uneven and flowing patterns on the page
please be aware that you don't want students dragging brush back and forwards repeatedly over their page as they will lose the watery effect which is what they are aiming for. This step caie Han take a while especially if you leave each colour to dry in between painting.
OVERLAY SKETCH
Decide what you want to draw to add into your artwork eg Harbour Bridge ; seals and penguins ; tree canopy shapes from aerial perspective
Get students to draw whatt they wish to have in their work on a piece of A4 paper. This is inexpensive and easily replaced if the students make an error. The size of the paper you give your students here will be dictated for the use of overhead projector transparenceies as your sketch image. Ie the student might draw one image like OPS 56M students have used in Harbour Bridge Works or they could draw a line to halve their page draw up one way then turn around and draw other way to cut in half and use 2 images on page if more suitable for your topic.
Teacher has to photocopy drawing onto overhead transparencies.
Then get students to select where they which to attach the image. Best way to attach images is to use needle and thread and do a cross stitch on each corner.
My class choose to draw beyond the edges of the transparency images to complete their work.
